Scary experience again (EN)

May 15, 2006

Yesterday my laptop was totally flat... I mean dead...

After finishing our dinner, I came back to my seat. I was watering my Jasmine which was next to my seat, and I heard again this time much much big noise coming from my computer.

What's going on?!?!?!

I asked to my husband if it was making such noise while I was cooking. He said "No".

I turn the power off immediately. I was wondering what was wrong... I was just keeping some of the application opened. And that noise. I have no clue..

I made phone call to NEC Japan customer support center using my husband's skype. (Thanks to skype, phone call to Japan got much cheaper.) Since similar thing happened last year, so I know what to do beforehand.

Electric Discharge.

I did this for more than one hour. Last time, this worked, but not this time. I started looking into BIOS. Then I found it said "NO HDD". TOT.. I thought it is helpless to make phone call to Japanese support center, but anyhow I wanted to be confirmed by these professional people that my computer dead... As assumed as I did, they said the same thing as I was expected to me, and recommended me to send it to the repair center. I thanked them and hung up the phone. I mean clicked the red button to disconnect the conversation in this case...

I started thinking about buying the new one. But I just used this computer for just about 3 years.. Long? I think it is too early to buy the new one! The NEC manual said that HDD can be used about 5 years being used 8 hours per day. Maybe I was using much more than that... But still 3 years is so fast to replace, I think...

Anyhow, I left my dead computer as it was on my desk and kept it rest whole night. What a long night it was! I didn't have anything to do. Because we don't have TV, what I can do is just reading magazines or reading newspapers or take shower, brush and floss my teeth, and go to bed...

Next day I anyway boost my computer on just to see if it was still dead or not.

Sounds well, lights well, it looks fine!

I could make it alive again!! I didn't do anything.. Just let it rest for one night.. Very happy again! How simple is that!

Now I started to rest my computer whenever I'm not using it. Before I was just letting it on even I was not using it if it is during the daytime. (I was turning it off when it was at night.) Again I thought I should do back up more often. Anyhow, how scary it was to see "NO HDD" or "Cannot find operating system..." on the monitor...
